A full-featured version of AutoCAD was first released for the Microsoft Windows platform in 1987. Although AutoCAD is primarily a desktop application, its graphic features are designed to work with other Autodesk products including AutoCAD LT (a less expensive, shareware version), AutoCAD Architect (a 3D modeling and design program) and AutoCAD Civil 3D (a subset of 3D Civil Engineering that allows for the use of land, water and vegetation data).

The AutoCAD trademark was acquired by Autodesk in October 2011 and the AutoCAD corporate site is maintained as a part of the Autodesk brands.
The origins of AutoCAD go back to the late 1960s when Donald R. Evans, a retired USAF colonel, developed a set of drawings for his home. Evans developed his drawing program using a low-cost Graphtec graphic terminal attached to a Commodore PET computer. He demonstrated his program to others, and one of them, Roy C. Smith, encouraged Evans to publish his work. In 1969, Smith wrote Evans to inform him that he and a team of collaborators were planning a new CAD software package for the company Tektronix. Smith and his team were working under the name of Micro CAD, and by the end of that year, Smith and his team introduced a commercial version of their CAD program to the Tektronix engineering department.
In 1970, Smith sold Micro CAD to Tektronix, and renamed his team at Tektronix to Autodesk. Smith is credited with “thinking big” by many CAD experts, including Autodesk’s own Steven B. Pfaendler. Smith and his colleagues at Autodesk developed the first commercial CAD system that was based on the concept of a program that would generate working drawings directly on a computer screen. According to Smith, this original program, still referred to as Micro CAD, had the “grand design objective of making a CAD program that was as simple to use as a typewriter”.
Initially, Autodesk relied heavily on the company’s existing Minisoft line of CAD products, which consisted of four separate products: CAD-AM (Athletic Management), CAD-AM Plus (Athlet
